Celtics, but not Bobcats, filled with fighters

If there was one thing I wouldn’t want a teammate to say about me, it would be that I have no fight. I’d rather have a teammate say I was the least-skilled player ever, or as ugly as Tyrone Hill, or that I had a jump shot not even Ben Wallace would want. Okay, maybe I’d rather have no fight than be as ugly as Tyrone Hill, but still: One of the worst things a teammate could possibly say about you is that you have no fight.

I now forward you to Charlotte, where that insult is precisely the one Gerald Wallace just hurled at D.J. Augustin, while comparing Augustin to former Bobcat Raymond Felton. (Hang on, folks. I will tie the Celtics into this in time.) Read more »

Rumor: Ainge ‘reluctant to pull trigger’ on Allen trade

Rumors have flown everywhere about Ray Allen being traded.  But the Boston Herald’s Mark Murphy says Allen will likely finish the season in Boston.

Ray Allen, who has an expiring max contract, remains the Celtics’ largest trade bait. The team continues to measure the veteran guard’s appeal on the market, but Ainge is reluctant to pull the trigger. Allen still is considered an important asset and likely will finish the season with the Celts.

But the C’s may revisit talks for [D.J.] Augustin. Although Ainge said he never spoke with Bobcats officials about the shooting point guard, two league sources confirmed Celtics coach Doc Rivers actually called his mentor – Charlotte coach Larry Brown – and offered Glen Davis for Augustin.

Brown countered by asking for Rasheed Wallace – whom he previously coached in Detroit – in place of Davis.

The conversation ended there.

Despite Wallace’s inconsistent start, the Celtics believe the veteran forward’s unique skills will be invaluable down the stretch.

Murphy also said the Celtics are very interested in finding a backup point guard who can defend, mentioning Kirk Hinrich and Augustin as possibilities.

I remain steadfastly against Hinrich. Despite his reputation as a solid defender, he’s an overpaid backup guard making $17 million over the next two years.

Murphy said the Celtics remain in “window shopping mode” for now, but that it could change by the deadline.

But his whole sense of Boston remaining calm is perhaps contradicted by a quote from an unnamed source to end the article, speaking of Boston’s potential reaction to an Amare-to-Cleveland deal.

“I don’t think it would give them more urgency than they already have.”

So what is it? Are they already very urgent, or are they calmly “window shopping” and “reluctant to pull the trigger” on a big trade?

The next couple days will tell.

Ainge denies Bobcat rumors, hints at small trade

If you are to believe Danny Ainge, these two will likely remain opponents rather than teammates.

Danny Ainge spoke with WEEI today for his weekly appearance, and the talk focused mostly around trade speculation.  ESPNBoston’s Chris Forsberg broke it down.

Ainge, rumored to have been in discussions with Charlotte regarding a trade involving D.J. Augustin and Glen Davis, first denied those rumors.

“We haven’t had any discussions with Charlotte,” said Ainge. “There was some speculation that they were looking for a 4, and we were looking for a backup point guard. People try to put things together. We have no had discussions. I like the player in the trade [Augustin], but we like Glen Davis a lot, too.”

Ainge then hinted at perhaps favoring a small trade over blowing the nucleus up by trading Ray Allen.

“I think a trade is one way to fix it, if it’s a trade that helps you,” said Ainge. “I think that, first of all, health is going to fix [Boston's struggles]. Our guys are going to get more healthy as the year goes on, I’ve been saying that, and I still believe that. I don’t know what we’re going to be able to do from a trade standpoint — trades are very difficult to do in the NBA right now.

“We’re going to try to do something. I feel like we need to do something. It might be something very small — tweak the personality of our team.”

Later Ainge added: “I’ll know more by this time next week, if there’s anything we can do to win better this year and still not hurt us down the road. So I’m exploring, those are the only kind of deals I’d consider doing right now. Right now, I’m not ready to blow it up. [Maybe] if there was a very intriguing young player, but those are not available.”

“We’re going to try to do something.  I feel like we need to do something.  It might be very small — tweak the personality of our team.”  – Sounds like the words of a man trying to add a piece to the puzzle instead of shaking up the entire puzzle.

But it’s trade season, and you never know.

Trade Rumor: Glen Davis for D.J. Augustin?

Glen Davis might soon be a Charlotte Bobcat.

According to TrueHoop, the Celtics are in trade talks with the Charlotte Bobcats centered around D.J. Augustin.

The Boston Celtics and Charlotte Bobcats are discussing a trade centered around Glen “Big Baby” Davis and D.J. Augustin, according to league sources.

The sources cautioned that nothing is imminent, but said the clubs are having discussions.[...]

A straight-up trade would not work because Davis is a base-year compensation player, so other players would have to be involved to meet the financial requirements. That could be a sticking point in the deal.

I’m not quite sure how I like Augustin in the C’s backcourt. With his size, there’s not much chance he and Eddie House can fit in the same backcourt. He is, though, an upgrade on the C’s current backup point guard situation… mostly because they don’t have a true point guard to back up Rajon Rondo.

Red Claws Road Recap

The Maine Red Claws, the D-League affiliate of the Boston Celtics and the Charlotte Bobcats, officially began their inaugural season on the road over the weekend. They played the Sioux Falls Skyforce on Friday night in South Dakota and the Dakota Wizards Saturday night in North Dakota. This sort of short road trip is common for the D-League.
