Rondo, Johnson working out with Oklahoma City Thunder at University of Kentucky

Rajon Rondo and JaJuan Johnson are reportedly among several players working out at the University of Kentucky, where the Oklahoma City Thunder are holding a a Nazr Mohammed-organized training camp of sorts.

You know what that means, right? Rondo and Perk, balling in Kentucky, K-I-S-S-I-N-G. Or something like that.

It also means, in all likelihood, that Rondo demonstrated enough leadership to invite JaJuan Johnson to work out at Kentucky with him. We’ve come a long way since Rondo was characterized as a brooding, selfish headache for the Celtics coaching staff, when Danny Ainge put Rondo on the trading block but ultimately decided the juice was worth the squeeze.

To recap what all Celtics are doing now:

  • Avery Bradley just signed in Israel, but his deal includes an NBA opt-out for whenever the lockout ends.
  • Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett were most recently spotted at the NBA labor negotiations. Garnett was his usual animated self at the meeting, urging players not to cave to owners’ demands, causing a fellow player to say, “I respect the [expletive] out of those guys standing up for us right now.”
  • Rondo (who will participate in Lebron James’s charity game Saturday night) and Johnson are working out together at Kentucky, as I just noted, where Johnson is preferably using the Glen Davis diet. Davis, in case you were wondering, has been relatively quiet this offseason. I am not sure what he’s currently doing, but I hope it does not involve 4 a.m. fights with whoever is driving his car.
  • Jermaine O’Neal has not been heard from publicly, I don’t believe, since participating in the Impact Basketball Series. I imagine he’s now somewhere, either working out daily or trying to silly glue his joints back in place in order to work out daily.
  • E’Twaun Moore is playing for Benetton Treviso of the Italian League with Brian Scalabrine. In their last game, Moore outscored Scal, 9-8. Fellow NBAer Jeff Adrien scored 10 points and some dude named Moldaveanu led the team with 15.
  • Jeff Green, a restricted free agent, was last spotted playing in a handful of charity exhibitions. Sadly, I doubt he is spending much of his time mastering the box out.
  • Gilbert Brown, an undrafted free agent who the Celtics showed interest in prior to the lockout, played his first official game (I think) for the German team S. Oliver Wuerzburg on Oct. 3. Unfortunately, Brown only played six more minutes than I did, finishing with two points to go along with one rebound. Former UMass star Ricky Harris led Brown’s team with 18 points, but alas, you probably don’t care.

Glen Davis to compete in Baton Rouge Pro-Am Classic

When the NBA returns — and it actually will return, suggests Chris Sheridan — Glen Davis will be a free agent rather than a member of the Boston Celtics. And he actually knows where he’s going to play next:

Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

No, Davis isn’t joining a new NBA team that will play its home games in Baton Rouge. Rather, he will compete in the Baton Rouge Pro-Am Classic this weekend with a number of former pros. (Green Street, WEEI)

Big Baby will join Louisiana State University alumni Marcus Thornton (a restricted free agent), Anthony Randolph (Timberwolves) and Ronald Dupree (D-League’s Utah Flash) as well as a host of other NBA talents in the Baton Rouge Pro-Am Classic on Saturday and Sunday.

Grizzlies O.J. Mayo and Zach Randolph, Bucks swingman Stephen Jackson and retired four-time NBA All-Star Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway are also expected to participate in the tournament, scheduled to tip off at 9 a.m. on the Baton Rouge Community College campus. Proceeds from the $5 to $15 tickets will benefit the BRCC men’s and women’s basketball programs.

When last seen playing basketball during the NBA playoffs, Glen Davis was doing his best impression of a disappearing man. Now, his future with the Celtics is in question as they must determine whether he’s worth market value.

On another note: remember when Penny Hardaway wanted to make a comeback last season? Yeah, that worked well. Also, for safety reasons, inviting Zach Randolph and Stephen Jackson to play in the same charity game is not advised.

Paul Pierce could play in new Impact Basketball league

A new basketball league consisting of entirely professional players is beginning in September. Impact Basketball, an elite training facility in Las Vegas, will host the league, which will reportedly consist of nearly 70 NBA players.

The league does not seem like it is meant to compete with the NBA, but it will provide players the opportunity to play competitive games during the NBA lockout. (HoopsWorld)

Joe Abunassar, the founder and head trainer of Impact Basketball, confirmed that the league will kick off in mid-September, likely during the week following Labor Day. Two games will be played each day and the league is expected to last at least two weeks long. There is a possibility that the games will be streamed online.

“It will start in September, with two games a day,” Jared Dudley told HOOPSWORLD. “There will be a blend of all-stars, veterans and rookies. We’ll play by NBA rules – have a 24-second shot clock and everything. You heard of the Drew League and Goodman League, but the difference with this league is that it’s not a pro-am. There will just be NBA pros. It really gets guys ready for the NBA season. I’m excited every summer because at Impact, you only can get better. Now, the games are there to put what you learn into action on the court.”

Many NBA players, including Celtics Paul Pierce, Jermaine O’Neal, Glen Davis, Rajon Rondo and Kevin Garnett, have trained at Impact Basketball through the years. Alex Kennedy reports that Pierce and O’Neal (among others) “might play in the league,” and that Garnett, Davis, and Rondo are also possibilities because of their existing relationship with Impact Basketball. Others who have never trained at Impact Basketball will also be invited to join the league.

The NBA players are far more prepared for an NBA lockout now than they were in 1999. Leagues are being organized. Players are finding alternative work overseas. There’s a better plan now for the players to stay in shape and survive during the lockout.

Impact Basketball’s league is the next step, and it’s a good one. Well, that is, unless you actually want the NBA to return. Then, the thought of another basketball league that begins soon is only the latest indication that this lockout could last a very long time.

Glen Davis: Celtics are my number one priority

Glen Davis goes back and forth more than a tennis ball. He flip-flops more than Tevas. So when he says re-signing with the Celtics is his number one priority in free agency, I take it with a grain of salt. (Boston Globe)

“Most definitely, that’s my No. 1 priority – see if I can come back here and play,’’ he said. “And if I can’t, go somewhere else.’’

His words were tamer than they were in May, when it appeared Davis had grown tired of coach Doc Rivers’s treatment.

“I think in a lot of situations you have to air things out,’’ said Davis, who because of the NBA lockout cannot have contact with the Celtics front office. “Especially with a player that’s growing. You’ve got to talk and clear things up, and I think that time will come whenever the opportunity comes. I’m just trying to focus on working out.’’

Playing-wise, Davis would help the Celtics. Forget for a second that he ended last season playing (and looking) like a beached whale. Forget for a second the gripes with Doc Rivers, and the iffy shot selection at times, and the amount of weight he reportedly gained during the middle of last season. The Celtics need big men like a Diabetes patient needs insulin. Jermaine O’Neal is their only current center, and if he plays more than 60 games next season, church bells will ring in every Massachusetts city. The Celtics will have very little cap space to sign capable bigs, but if the new CBA resembles the old one, they could extend beyond the cap to re-sign Davis.

That said, signing him would be a risk. As a reasonably-talented big man who can play two positions, finished fourth in the Sixth Man of the Year voting (I know — shocking), plays two ways (most of the time) and possesses championship-level experience, Davis will likely command a sizable contract. And maybe he’s earned it. But if you’re the Celtics, do you feel comfortable spending a significant portion of your (extremely valuable) cap space on an overweight, underheight whiner who clashes with Doc Rivers and averaged only 4.9 points and 3.6 rebounds (while shooting 39.1%) in the playoffs? Neither would I. Save the cap space for 2012, pray for a superstar (Dwight Howard, anyone?), or settle for solid free agents (aka: please, don’t spend money on any Travis Outlaws) — even if that means losing more games next season.

So, yeah, Glen Davis said he wants to remain a Celtic. He also said he wants to go somewhere Glen Davis can be Glen Davis, and I assume he wants to go somewhere Glen Davis can be paid. Sometimes, it’s mutually beneficial to part ways. This might be one of those times.

Or, then again, maybe not.

P.S. — Davis said he’s interested in signing overseas.

All The Answers, Episode 1 (a new Celtics video blog)

I bought a web cam yesterday. Since I’m mostly 100% broke, I probably should have saved my money for something more important, such as “food” or “finally moving out of my parents’ basement.”

But I thought beginning a Boston Celtics video show of sorts would be enjoyable, so I splurged. Then I filmed the show, which I will call “All The Answers.” In the first episode, I discuss Jeff Green (a lot), Delonte West, Glen Davis, Rajon Rondo, free agency in general, the possibility of a Marquis Daniels return, and Dwight Howard saving babies off the top of the backboard.

I don’t know whether the show is enjoyable. You can be the judge of that. But below is me, answering peoples’ Boston Celtics questions and trying to make my newest purchase useful.

Let me know what you think, and tweet any questions for Episode 2 to @CelticsTown.

Glen Davis: “I want to keep playing with Ray and Paul until they leave”

A week ago, Glen Davis said he wants to go anywhere Glen Davis can be Glen Davis. At the time, he seemed like a goner. But his comments yesterday were a lot more level-headed and mature. He even told the Boston Herald he would like to return to the Boston Celtics. I’m not sure whether that means anything or he just finally decided to show some diplomacy.

Neither Davis nor Rivers publicly admit to having a problem, though Ainge said he wants the men to talk out their oft-emotional differences if they are to spend another season together.

If that opportunity arises, anyway.

Davis, at least, asserts that he wants to return.

“Man, I do,” Davis said yesterday. “Do you know how much I’ve grown and learned with those guys? I want to keep playing with Ray (Allen) and Paul (Pierce) until they leave.”

Maybe he meant to include Kevin Garnett. Maybe not.

During a chat with reporters, Davis discussed “adjusting my approach to food now.” He claims to recognize the need to change his lifestyle and also understands he needs to “eat for being healthy.” Not just because of basketball, either, although that would obviously become a beneficiary of Davis’s alleged health kick.

“I want to be with my kid forever,” Davis added of his 10-month-old daughter, Amari. “You can’t be 360 pounds and expect to play with your grandchildren. I have to be the player I can be.”

Davis said he just recently realized his own potential as a player, and wants to reach his ceiling. He has hired a sports psychologist, allegedly begun to diet, continued to work out as usual despite the likely lockout, and doesn’t actually hate Doc Rivers as much as it occasionally seems.

“Me and Doc have a good understanding,” [Davis] said. “My name’s Glen and his name’s Glenn. But Doc is Doc. I love the way he coaches. It’s just that me, as a player, didn’t adjust to him. When I first came here, my role was different than it is now. More importance on the team means more adjusting, and sometimes this year I had trouble with that. Mentally, it interrupted my game.

“So I got (the sports psychologist) because of the way I played in the postseason. It helps me to deal with Doc, and why I didn’t play well. Mentally it just became hard for me to see things. Just learn to be myself. I have to be in a zone all the time.”

Glen Davis’s summer is beginning to mirror his season. Ups and downs, peaks and valleys, times he makes me smile and times he makes me scratch my head.
