Highlight Reel: Larry Bird clutch plays

Jay King | September 8, 2010 at 3:45 pm | 2 Comments

I’ve got a confession: I am completely, 100% obsessed with Larry Bird: A basketball Legend. I could watch it on loop all day long. It starts off with these words:

“If you were to create the perfect basketball fable, it might begin in a small town in Indiana, where young boys grow up with a ball in their hands, a basket out back, and dreams of glory in their hearts. And there would be one boy who would continue to practice long after the others had gone home, and in those lonely hours as he honed his skills he would find the essence of the game, and in many ways, of himself.

“He would play with a passion of the underdog, the purity of tradition, and a vision that was his alone. He would touch the hearts of all those who watched him play and leave behind a sense of wonder, and a legend.”

I get goosebumps at those words. I really do.

Larry Bird, folks. The man, the myth, the Legend.

P.S. – On the first play in that batch of highlights, Bird shoots a one-footed runner from three-point range and the announcer said, “He gets a good shot.” THAT’S how good Bird was. A one-footed runner from the arc was a good shot.

Highlight Reel: Delonte West’s first stint in Boston

Jay King | September 7, 2010 at 4:30 pm | 0 Comments

I feel for Delonte. I understand how tough it is to be so handsome around these guys. On a daily basis, man, I understand what Delonte has to deal with. Don’t believe me? Just check out the picture of me at the bottom of this post. Clearly, I know Delonte’s pain. Us handsome guys have to stick together.

P.S. – I think I was trying out for Johnny Knoxville’s role in The Ringer when I took the pic. I’m not sure how I didn’t get the job. Obviously, I’d make a perfect Jeffy.

P.P.S. – Paul Pierce has done everything but play basketball this summer. And his blog is pretty much a waste of space.

Highlight Reel: This 5’10″ dunker can sky

Jay King | September 5, 2010 at 2:52 pm | 0 Comments

I just played basketball for the first time in a month or so, and I was out there ballin’. I’m serious, too. Nobody could guard me. I was in the zone. It doesn’t even matter that I’m a 23-year old former college basketball player and I was playing against high schoolers, because I’ve still got it. The shooting touch won’t go away, ladies and gentlemen. No matter how out of shape I get.

I’m just lucky I wasn’t playing against Jahii Carson. He probably would have dunked all over my face, and it would have been even more embarrassing because he isn’t even six feet tall. The man can sky.

P.S. – You might recognize Carson’s name as the player who said ““Austin Rivers, he just comes out and dominates every time. He’s got NBA speed and NBA moves already … I think he’s the best player in our class.” Rivers might be the best player in the class (and ESPN ranks him as such), but Carson’s no slouch himself. Even though I’m almost positive he uses Flubber in his shoes.

P.P.S. – Read Shaq’s question and answer with the New Orleans Times Picayune. He says some pretty interesting things.

Highlight Reel: Dominique Wilkins abusing rims and opponents

Jay King | September 1, 2010 at 2:30 pm | 1 Comment

Dominique Wilkins has a special place in Celtics history. Not only did he make a brief Celtics cameo in 1994-’95, but he also was half of the famous Bird-’Nique duel. The one where the two stars basically played one-on-one to decide who would win Game 7 of the 1988 Eastern Conference Semifinals.

But none of that is the reason I chose this highlight reel. I simply chose it because ‘Nique treated every rim he saw like it was his worst enemy.

Nate Robinson’s football highlights

Jay King | August 31, 2010 at 11:30 am | 3 Comments

I just showed my little brother Nate Robinson’s football highlights and his response was brief: “I would never, ever punt to that dude.” Me neither. And I wouldn’t have played him at defensive back, either, which is where he played at Washington. He would have been scoring touchdowns on my squad.

Highlight Reel: I’ve got goosebumps

Jay King | August 30, 2010 at 5:00 pm | 9 Comments

R.L. Stine, son. Goosebumps. If you don’t get them while watching this video, you definitely aren’t a Celtics fan.
