Throwing some dimes, starring Antoine Walker as one of the worst champions ever

Every once in a while, I link to a few articles from other writers around the internet. You know, I throw some dimes.

  1. Basketbawful makes the claim that Antoine Walker, who won a ring with the Heat, is one of the worst NBA champions ever. I was prepared to argue the case, but then Basketbawful pulled out this stat: “Those two things — inefficient O, shaky D — were recurring trends for Walker, who never once finished a season with a better Offensive Rating than Defensive Rating. In fact, his finished his career with an O-Rating of 97 and a D-Rating of 105. That’s right: ‘Toine was worth -8 points per 100 possessions over his career.” Damn. If ‘Toine was really THAT bad, doesn’t that make what Paul Pierce accomplished in those years even more special? He already dragged Eric Williams, Tony Battie and Kenny Anderson to the Conference Finals. Now Antoine might have been dead weight too?
  2. Another day, another columnist tearing Shaq apart for his Mo Williams comments. This time, it’s Cleveland columnist Bud Shaw.
  3. Nate Robinson’s jersey is going to be retired by his high school, Rainer Beach. Surprisingly, Nate only averaged 17.9 points per game in his senior year.
  4. Kendrick Perkins actually has a solid highlight tape.
  5. Wow. People really painted a swastika on an Omri Casspi mural? That’s as bad as it gets. Some people need to grow up.
  6. I’m falling in love with the Turkish national team and the way they play basketball. I’m not falling in love with Semih Erden, who largely does nothing. But the real concern is, what in the world is Hedo Turkoglu doing at the beginning of this clip?

Got a tip? An article you think should be included? Send an email to jayking@celticstown.com or hit me up on Twitter @CelticsTown.

Celtics face sorry bunch in Kings

I dare you to look at this picture and not laugh.

Let me give it to you straight. I wouldn’t want to sugarcoat anything.

Tonight’s matchup with the Sacramento Kings is a game the Boston Celtics should win.

Unless you happen to fear midgetized power forwards who can score, score, and score some more, Tyreke Evans is the only King who strikes any semblance of fear in your heart… and he’ll miss the game due to a concussion.

The Kings also start a 7-footer at center, one with legitimate skill and post touch. The problem is, he’s softer than silly putty and his best highlight so far this year is a pre-game chest bump with his coach. Never a good thing, when aspiring to win basketball games.

But fear not, Kings fans, your team has a talented, 6’7″ guard to pick up the slack. Of course, a physio-ball got the best of him before the season, and he hardly fares better against the NBA than he did against that blasted workout ball.

Don’t worry though, Sacto, the Kings also have a Slovenian point guard averaging 19 points and 11 assists over his last three games. The stuff of legends. You know, if legends were as good at defense as a stick of celery and as overpaid as Antoine Walker’s financial consultant.

Still, everything’s okay in Sacramento. The Kings still have that Jewish guy who participated in the H.O.R.S.E. contest. Of course, he was put to shame by Kevin Durant and Rajon Rondo in that competition and has been even more humbled during his last four games. Over that time, he has scored nine more points in the NBA than his rabbi.

No need to frown though, Sactown. The Kings have a tough, veteran small forward known for his shooting prowess and gritty play. Then again, he’s older than most of his teammates and doesn’t seem to fit into his organization’s plans. Actually, come to think of it, he just asked to be traded.

There is a silver lining, though. The Kings just lost to the Nets during their last game. As Celtics fans, we all know how humiliating that is. But why is such public embarrassment a light at the end of the tunnel?

Because, for the Sacramento Kings, there’s nowhere to go but up.

The game is at 7:30 p.m. EST. Enjoy.

Rondo called out by executive suggesting ways to fix HORSE

Wouldn't you rather see Larry Bird in the HORSE competition than Omri Casspi or Rajon Rondo?

When you heard the news that Rajon Rondo was in the All-Star Weekend’s HORSE competition, you probably thought to yourself, “Huh? How could a guy who can’t even make a free throw be selected to participate in HORSE?”

You weren’t the only one. An unnamed league exec bashed the NBA’s HORSE competition and the players it selects, and suggested some changes to make it better.

Via TrueHoop:

The league selects the absolute worst H.O.R.S.E. competitors.

Rajon Rondo???

Here’s how you make H.O.R.S.E. good:

You gotta have the guy who hits crazy impossible shots. Steve Nash would have been perfect.

You gotta have guys with OVERSIZED trash talking personalities. A guy like Eddie House or Rasheed Wallace or even Brandon Jennings. Just an all-round talker.

Nash, Nate Robinson, Rasheed, and Baron Davis. Now that’s a HORSE competition worth watching.

Omri Casspi should be interesting. He looks like he has some off-the-wall stuff.

Not Kevin Durant’s boring a–! And definitely not Rondo! Knock him out making five consecutive free throws!!

I say take it one step farther: have Larry Bird and Reggie Miller participate in the HORSE competition. Can you imagine Bird, mic’ed up, trying to eliminate Reggie? Trash-talking the whole time? Would either of them ever miss a clutch shot to end the game?

Someone on one of the million NBA telecasts I watched over the last week suggested that Bird and Miller be asked to join the three-point contest, but HORSE seems like an even better fit.
