Report: Roy Rogers will not return as Celtics assistant coach

Roy Rogers, who was hired as an assistant coach last season after the Celtics let go of Clifford Ray, will not return to Boston’s bench next season (whenever that begins, and, um, if it begins). (Boston Herald)

The contracts for all of Doc Rivers’ assistant coaches expired on June 30, but only one has been told to find another job. Two league sources confirmed that Roy Rogers, who replaced Clifford Ray as big man coach last season, will not return.

The reason had nothing to do with Rogers’ ability. He is still considered one of the league’s finest big coaches. But the Celtics will no longer use that kind of a specialist, which may be appropriate, considering that their only true center at the moment is Jermaine O’Neal.

Considering that Boston’s one and only center currently under contract is Jermaine O’Neal, the Celtics should not waste the money that would have been spent on Rogers. Instead, they should invest Rogers’ contract into expanding the team’s training staff, purchasing a new ice tub, or maybe even researching Mr. Miyagi’s ancient Japanese healing tricks. At some point next season, I would bet my Indiana St. Larry Bird jersey that O’Neal will need Miyagi’s special touch.

Adam Morrison works out for Celtics, again

(“More people should cry,” Morrison said. “And when I get to the NBA, more people will cry.” Yeah, like fans of the team thinking about picking Morrison up.)

No need to worry about Adam Morrison, guys. He’s been working out for the Celtics and hopes to score a training camp invite, but there’s no chance in hell he’ll actually make the team. Right? RIGHT??? (Yahoo!)

Still searching for another shooter, the Boston Celtics have Adam Morrison working out for their front-office and coaching staffs this week at the team’s practice facility, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Morrison worked out on Tuesday and planned to do so again on Wednesday, sources said.

The Celtics aren’t close to deciding if they’ll make any kind of make-good contract offer for training camp.

Believe me, I’m all for the token white guy who waves a towel at the end of the bench. Just not if it’s Adam Morrison. I would rather sign Diana Taurasi and see what she could do against the big boys. And that’s almost in all honesty.

P.S. – Filed under the “if you care about assistant coaches” department, the Celtics are also prepared to hire Roy Rogers to replace Clifford Ray. Rogers actually had a nine-game cup of coffee with the Celtics during the 1997-1998 campaign, averaging a whopping 0.8 points, 0.6 rebounds and 0.1 assists.

He was then a throw-in in the Chauncey Billups for Kenny Anderson trade, a trade that worked oh so well for the Celtics. Most recently, Rogers was an assistant coach for the New Jersey Nets, who obviously would have lost a lot more than 70 games last season had Rogers not been around to give wonderful advice.
