The Red Claws-Armor rivalry is really heating up this month. The two teams play each other five times in January, then don’t face off again until the end of March.
Last night was Elvis Night at the Portland Expo. Yesterday would have been Elvis’s 75th birthday, and he was scheduled to perform in Maine a few days after his death. So, the Red Claws last night hosted Elvis (or at least, an impersonator) at the halftime of their 95-91 victory over Springfield.

8:00PM Friday, January 8, Portland Expo, Portland, Maine
The Maine Red Claws last saw regional rival Springfield Armor (Philadelphia 76ers, New York Knicks, New Jersey Nets) in early December. The two teams played back-to-back games in Portland, then in Springfield, as they are this Friday and Saturday. The Red Claws won both games by large margins (102-79, 115-89), but since then the Armor have significantly revamped their roster.
Every year, each NBA D-League teams travels to one location for the D-League Showcase. Each team plays twice while there in a carnival-style format. While the Showcase was originally intended as a chance for NBA scouts to see all the D-League teams and players in one place, it’s become a heavily-marketed fan-oriented event, as well. 16 D-League games will be played in four days in Boise, Idaho.
Last night the Maine Red Claws continued the weekend trend and snapped a winning streak with a disappointing home loss. They followed the lead of the Celtics’ home loss to Philly Friday night in the TD Garden, which ended an eleven-game winning streak for Boston. Saturday it was the Red Claws’ turn, as their 113-105 loss ended a seven-game winning streak, dropping them to 7-2 and ending their brief possession of the best record in the D-League. Another sellout crowd in the Portland Expo watched the Claws come out in the first half and let the Fort Wayne Mad Ants walk all over them. The visitors seemed to sink every basket early on, working together in a way they clearly hadn’t during their Friday night OT loss to Springfield. By halftime the Red Claws were trailing 62-55.
