Marbury wants to return to NBA

When Stephon Marbury news rains, it pours. And I’m not sure what’s funnier — that he sold his business for a single dollar or that he’s trying to return to the NBA. (Boston Globe)

Stephon Marbury has signed with agent Arn Tellem and is seeking a return to the NBA. The ex-Celtic played last season in China. Include Marbury with Allen Iverson and Tracy McGrady as free agents who could be waiting a while for work.

I love the last line. “Include Marbury with Allen Iverson and Tracy McGrady as free agents who could be waiting a while for work.” Three or four years ago, you couldn’t have imagined the free-fall those three guys have taken.

P.S. – I think Marbury is the only person in the world who knows how to ruin a personal brand quicker than Lebron did. Congrats, Steph.

P.P.S. – Marbury’s agent should give David Kahn a ring. I hear Kahn is desperately seeking a tenth-string point guard.

Stephon Marbury sold entire company for $1

One of my favorite pictures ever.

If there was anyone in the world who could sell an entire company for one measly dollar, it’s Stephon Marbury. (TMZ)

Stephon Marbury — who once made tens of millions to ride the NY Knicks’ bench — is now in a legal battle over the sale of his company … for the grand total of $1, according to court documents.

In the lawsuit, filed Friday in L.A. County Superior Court, a woman named Thuymai K. Ung claims Marbury agreed to sell her 100% of his company — which includes a piece of property in L.A. — back in December … for the sum of one American dollar.

In the documents, Ung alleges that Marbury is now claiming that he still owns part of the company and/or the property.

I can only assume the company Marbury sold for a single dollar is the Starbury shoe company. And wouldn’t you know it – the only thing cheaper than Starbury shoes is the company that sells them.

By the way, the company is currently in forclosure. An absolute shocker — I never would have expected a company that sells sneakers for less than it costs to make them to be in forclosure.

P.S. - I wonder why he didn’t sell his company by an auction. He would have made a lot more than a dollar that way. Like, maybe seven or eight bucks?

Kevin Garnett disses Rondo accidentally

If you were a rebounding center, who would be the worst player you could be compared to?  Maybe Mark Blount.

If you were a shooter, maybe Ben Wallace or Andris Biedrins.  A defender, perhaps Jason Kapono.  A winner, potentially Vince Carter.  Good teammate, probably Andray Blatche or Gilber Arenas.

But who would be the worst player you could be compared to, if you were an intelligent NBA point guard?  It just might be one of the two players Kevin Garnett compares to Rajon Rondo.  (Jimmy Toscano, CelticsBlog)

Asked to compare Rondo with previous point guards that Garnett has played with, Stephon Marbury and Chauncey Billups, Garnett had even more praise for Rondo.

“Rondo just doesn’t score the ball, he’s just as intelligent as Steph or Chauncey.”

I know Garnett didn’t mean it as an insult, but a compliment.  But to say somebody is “just as intelligent” a basketball player as Stephon Marbury?  The man who never seemed to know when to shoot or pass, to be aggressive or passive?  That’s nothing short of a backhanded slap across the mug.  Pretty severe, as far as insults go.

To be fair, KG did play with Steph (the first time around) when Steph was a rising stud, and one of the NBA’s top young point guards.  Back then, he was a dime machine and could get to the rack on anybody.  But even though he put up big numbers, Marbury was never a winner.  His intelligence — even before people started to try to put Marbury in a box, even before vaseline became part of his diet, even before selling dirt-cheap sneakers became more important than his NBA career — could always be questioned.

I’d like to think Rondo’s a smarter player than Steph, and that it isn’t even close. Anybody with me?

Highlight Reel: Marbury’s ‘mid-court three-pointers’ in China

A few days ago, Stephon Marbury won the MVP of the Chinese Basketball Association’s All-Star game. In the write-up of the game, a Chinese news agency described Marbury’s “no-look passes, alley-hoops, and mid-court three-pointers” as bringing the game energy.

If you were as skeptical as I was of the mid-court three-pointers, here you go: A video of Marbury’s late-game barrage of deep, deep threes. They weren’t exactly from mid-court, but they were well outside the normal range of human beings who don’t eat vaseline.

Now, if I could only see a highlight of those “alley-hoops.”

Stephon Marbury wins MVP of Chinese All-Star game

Stephon Marbury was named the MVP of the Chinese Basketball Association’s All-Star game.  (NY Times)

More than just his scoring, it was his array of “no-look passes, alley-hoops and mid-court three-pointers” that won Marbury Most Valuable Player honors and rescued what had been “quite a dull game,” according to the Xinhua news agency.

“I didn’t expect anything before the game,” Marbury, who plays for the Shanxi CBA team, said. “I just wanted to have fun here. But I do think I made some impact on this game.”

Midcourt three-pointers, eh?  Alley-hoops, too?  It looks like Marbury has learned a few new tricks in China.

But the real question is: How much does vaseline cost over there?

This Michael Finley comparison made me chuckle

I’d be willing to wager my left elbow that this is the first time in his life Michael Finley has ever been compared to Stephon Marbury.  (Sports Illustrated)

Given a realistic appraisal of the team’s injuries, age and current performance, Boston’s best hope for the postseason is a huge upgrade from Paul Pierce to near-vintage level. Garnett’s chronic physical woes leave him bereft of another gear, Ray Allen has already raised his game since the All-Star break, and recent acquisitions Nate Robinson and Michael Finley are more Stephon Marbury than P.J. Brown when it comes to veteran rescues among the supporting cast.

I can see the Nate to Steph comparison.  They’re both ex-Knick point guards who were acquired by the Celtics midway through the season.  But the comparison stops there.  Robinson is far better then Stephon was for the C’s last season.

And Finley? The team-first, non-vaseline eating, consummate professional, reminds me a lot more of Brown than Marbury.
